Andrew Hofmeyr Naturalist, Artist & Writer

Andrew Hofmeyr is a South African artist and naturalist with a master's degree in English Literature. He is passionate about animals, and plants alike, especially reptiles and amphibians. When he isn't writing about Africa's incredible creatures and cultures, you'll find him in his art studio or out exploring the wilderness.

Andrew has traveled widely and spent many years living in Asia and Europe. He loves hiking, rock climbing, wild swimming, camping, and noticing the small miracles of nature. The Drakensberg and Maloti mountains in South Africa and Lesotho are among his favorite places, along with the indigenous forests of the Amatola Mountains.

On his travels, Andrew gravitates to out-of-the-way places and likes to experience the local culture, always engaging with the people he encounters. His curiosity has taken him on many unusual adventures in Africa and abroad - always discovering all kinds of interesting things about the local flora, fauna, history, and people.

Andrew runs a community project in Swellendam called the Masbieker’s Valley Project which seeks to build community and reconnect people with nature through art. Clearing invasive species, planting indigenous, and engaging with the local Swellendamers are all part of the project.

As a writer and artist storytelling is a central theme in Andrew's work. Narrative shapes our experience and understanding of the world, and it is through telling and hearing stories that the world becomes a richer place.
